17 Arrested for Operating Illegal Bureau De Change in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has detained 17 suspected illegal forex traders during an operation in the Wappa Bureau De Change area of Fagge local government area, as announced on May 7, 2024.

The operation, detailed by Police Spokesperson SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, was conducted jointly with the Department of State Services (DSS) to stabilize the foreign exchange market and curb unauthorized activities.

During the raid, which specifically targeted locations of foreign exchange transactions, a total of 29 individuals were initially apprehended. Following thorough screening, 12 were released due to insufficient evidence, while the remaining 17 were held in custody.

Recovered from the arrested suspects were items including 68,000 CFA and 30 Indian Rupees. Kiyawa explained that these individuals belonged to an unlicensed association of Bureau De Change operators and would face legal charges.

The statement highlighted that the raid aimed to eliminate illegal operators to ensure market stability, noting that licensed Bureau de Change businesses conducting legitimate transactions were not affected.

Police Commissioner Mohammed Gumel praised the collaborative efforts of the police and DSS, emphasizing the commitment to lawful financial practices and warning against illegal activities.

The public was also encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the police, with assurances that those apprehended would be prosecuted.
