After a grueling five-day search, 59-year-old Lagos drainage worker discovered deceased in tunnel

In Lagos State, Tajudeen Amololo, a drainage worker, has died while working in an underground drainage system.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) has confirmed the death of the 59-year-old worker.

LASEMA’s permanent secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated on Friday that the worker was trapped for five days in a tunnel near the Onipan area. He was found deceased on Friday evening following intensive and exhaustive rescue efforts that spanned several days.

Oke-Osanyintolu detailed that the rescue operation, though strenuous, was carried out with unwavering determination. At approximately 5:53 p.m. on Friday, May 10, the victim was retrieved from the underground drainage and tunnel.

The agency swiftly processed the body, which was then handed over to LAMATA Drain Ducks by the officials on site.

The agency had initially responded to an emergency call from residents and onlookers at the Onipanu Bus Stop, who reported that a worker employed by LAMATA was trapped in the tunnel. Investigations revealed that the deceased was attempting to clear a clogged section of the underground drainage to restore water flow when he became trapped.
