The Nigerian Army has detained a soldier responsible for the death of 16-year-old Ismail Mohammed, who was killed while attempting to stop hoodlums in Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State, on Tuesday.
The Director of Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, released a statement on Wednesday in Abuja detailing the incident. According to Nwachukwu, troops received a distress call about a large group of hoodlums causing chaos in the Samaru area by burning tires and throwing stones at security personnel.
In response, the troops mobilized and arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd and enforce a state-imposed curfew. During the confrontation, a soldier fired a warning shot to disperse the hoodlums, which tragically resulted in the death of Ismail Mohammed.
The soldier involved has been arrested and is currently undergoing interrogation. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, expressed his sorrow over the incident. He dispatched a high-level delegation led by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Lander Saraso, to offer condolences to the family of the deceased.
Ismail Mohammed was buried according to Islamic rites, with senior Nigerian Army officers present at the ceremony.
