Bode George Laments Nation’s Condition, Says Nigeria is in Political and Economic Intensive Care

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s current state, describing it as alarming.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on the nation’s condition, George emphasized the urgent need for effective measures and policies to address the numerous challenges the country faces, particularly the economic difficulties.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to reassess some of his policies to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. George also urged the president to thoroughly examine the issues plaguing the oil, gas, and power sectors to find solutions that could steer the country out of its socio-economic crisis.

George highlighted that Nigeria is in a fragile and dangerous situation, requiring capable and competent leaders to guide the nation out of its current troubles.

“As someone who has been trained by and worked for this nation, I cannot stay silent when I see things going in the wrong direction. It’s not about creating conflicts,” George stated. “Our country, Nigeria, is in a political and economic intensive care unit. We need skilled professionals—political and economic surgeons—to help us recover. We need to put smiles on the faces of Nigerians, regardless of where they live.”

He added, “Some of us can manage, but what about the countless young Nigerians who can’t even afford a meal?”

Addressing the oil and gas sector and the ongoing fuel subsidy issues, George urged the president to be transparent with Nigerians.

Regarding electricity, George criticized the high cost of power, which he said has driven many small businesses out of the market. He expressed surprise that none of the 18 gas turbines acquired during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure had been put to use, stressing that regular and affordable power supply is essential for economic stability.

On the topic of the #EndBadGovernance protests, George praised the young Nigerians who peacefully expressed their concerns to the government.

Concerning food insecurity, George argued that importing food is not the solution. Instead, he advocated for short, medium, and long-term policies to empower local farmers.

He also called on the president to convene a closed-door meeting with former and current bank managing directors to chart a path forward.

George further advocated for restructuring, devolution of power, resource control, and electoral reforms. He urged the president and the National Assembly to revisit the recommendations from the 2014 National Conference.

Finally, George emphasized the need for Nigeria to overcome the challenges of tribalism and religious bigotry, which he said are hindering the nation’s progress.
