EFCC to pay pastor, wife N10 million for wrongly  designating as Wanted individualswithout Judicial Authorization

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) faced a legal defeat when the Federal High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, imposed a fine of N10 million on the agency for wrongly designating Pastor Oyinmiebi Biribena and his wife, Pastor Beatrice Biribena, as wanted individuals without judicial authorization.

The court case, presided over by Justice Dashen, concluded in favor of Pastor Biribena, who leads the Christ Embassy Church in Kumasi, Ghana.

The court found the EFCC’s declaration of the couple as wanted on June 8, 2022, to be unlawful, unconstitutional, and unjustifiable. As a consequence, Justice Dashen ordered the EFCC to issue a public apology to Pastor Biribena and his wife for the erroneous listing.

While the plaintiffs had sought damages of ₦100 million, the court awarded ₦10 million as exemplary damages against the EFCC for their actions.
