Gunmen kills two policemen, ambush three other security operatives in Enugu State

Armed groups outside of government control are causing chaos in Nigeria’s troubled South East region, resulting in the deaths of several security personnel in Enugu State.

Within the Igga community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA), two police officers and three members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group fell victim to an ambush.

DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Enugu police command, verified the incident and reported the arrest of three suspects linked to the ambush.

In a statement released on Monday, he condemned the attack as an “unprovoked, unjustified assault and brutal murder.”

The spokesperson explained that the security operatives were providing protection for a group of investors visiting from Lagos to inspect a proposed agricultural investment site when they were attacked and killed by criminal elements within the community last Friday evening.

Despite efforts by the police team to respond to the scene, only an assistant superintendent of police, a neighbourhood watch operative, and three members of the investor team were rescued. The fate of the slain team members remained unknown until a subsequent investigation and search operation led to the arrest of three male suspects, who disclosed the location of the bodies in the forest on May 4, 2024.

The recovered bodies were taken to the hospital for confirmation of death by medical professionals and preservation in the mortuary for autopsy purposes.

Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu denounced the murder of the security personnel as incomprehensible, cruel, and unjustifiable. He urged members of the Igga community, especially those involved in the heinous act, to surrender to the authorities promptly.
