Organizers of the hunger protests in Lagos and Osun states have announced a suspension of their demonstrations.
In Lagos, the protest is paused for 24 hours, while in Osun State, further protests are halted to allow for the peaceful celebration of the Osun-Osogbo Festival.
A Lagos High Court in Igbosere extended an earlier order restricting Lagos protesters to Freedom and Peace Parks in the Ojota and Ketu areas.
The decision to suspend the protest in Lagos was made during a congress held on Monday in Ojota.
Hassan Soweto, one of the organizers, stated that President Bola Tinubu’s speech failed to address the demonstrators’ demands. Juwon Sanyaolu, another organizer, announced that there would be no protest on Tuesday, with future actions to be communicated via social media.
Following the congress, some thugs attacked the group after they dispersed. In a WhatsApp message, Soweto mentioned a rally planned for today to honor those killed during the protests.
The message reads: “Important notice: As agreed at the congress this evening, we are not converging at Ojota tomorrow. The next convergence is Wednesday, August 7, 2024, which we declared as a Martyrs’ Day to honor our comrades killed across the country.”
