‘Impeachment directive is delusional’  — PDP tells APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its attempts to gain control over Rivers State. The APC’s caretaker committee in Rivers has called for the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

At a press conference in Port Harcourt, Tony Okocha, the APC’s state chair, accused Governor Fubara of disrespecting Tinubu. In response, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba, during a briefing in Abuja, described these actions as a delusional attempt by the APC to forcibly seize the state. He labeled the move as “delusional and hallucinatory,” highlighting it as a sign of the APC’s desperation, which he claims is rejected by the people of Rivers.

Debo emphasized that the individuals the APC has called upon to impeach the governor are not legally members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, having lost their seats due to defection from the PDP. He noted that according to Section 109 (1) (g) of the Nigerian Constitution, these members vacated their positions upon their defection.

The PDP has called this move by the APC an unlawful directive, amounting to a call for anarchy and a violation of the democratic order as per the Nigerian Constitution. The party has appealed to the inspector general of police to address the APC chair’s subversive statements, which it believes could trigger a crisis and derail democracy in Nigeria.

Governor Fubara has expressed disappointment with the assembly members’ attitude towards his administration and mentioned accepting a peace deal from Tinubu as a political solution to their differences. In December, 27 PDP legislators in the Rivers assembly defected to the APC, and their seats were declared vacant.
