The actress, alongside her production company Minini Empire Productions Limited (MEP), filed a legal challenge in January 2024 against filmmaker Chinenye Nworah, who is the recognized creator of the series.

Ini Edo’s petition aimed to transfer the trademarks and copyrights of the series to her name, citing claims of ownership.

However, both the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Trademark Registry have ruled against her, labeling her claims as unsubstantiated and lacking in legal merit. See also; The Life and Struggles of Area Mama: A Crossdresser’s Final Confession Before Tragedy Struck

Additionally, a separate request by Edo and MEP to annul the existing copyright certificates granted to Nworah for the literary and audiovisual elements of “Shanty Town” was dismissed by the NCC. With this ruling, Nworah’s status as the rightful owner of the series remains intact, bringing an end to the legal confrontation.
