Lagos Launches Crackdown on Illegal Styrofoam Storage

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has confiscated a significant amount of styrofoam from a warehouse in the Idumota area of Lagos.

LAGESC, tasked with ensuring a cleaner environment through enforcement of sanitation regulations and public education, took action to maintain hygiene across the state.

Earlier, on January 21, the Lagos government had imposed a ban on the use and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics statewide. Similarly, on June 25, the federal government prohibited the use of single-use plastics in all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to combat increasing plastic pollution in the country.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, stated that operatives from the ministry had seized the styrofoam packs and transported them for incineration. “Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) uncovered a warehouse in Idumota storing styrofoam packs,” the post read. “The items have been confiscated and taken to the Taskforce Office for incineration.”
