Lagos State Taskforce operatives seized 164 motorcycles, commonly known as “okada,” in various areas across the state yesterday, targeting illegal operations.
The operation, directed by Lagos State Commissioner of Police Adegoke Fayoade, focused on locations including the Badagry Expressway, Mile 2, Second Rainbow Bus Stop, V-Naija Bus Stop, Alabasuru, and Berger Bus Stop.
Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, who chairs the Taskforce, noted that some operators attempted to evade arrest by falsely claiming their motorcycles were owned by soldiers.
“We faced resistance from some okada operators who argued that the bikes were owned by soldiers and therefore untouchable,” Akerele stated. “I promptly corrected this misconception, stressing that there are no exceptions when it comes to maintaining order on our roads.”
The confiscated motorcycles were transported to the task force headquarters for crushing.
Akerele also reminded uniformed personnel using okadas to ensure they are in their official attire while riding. He cautioned commuters against using illegal okadas, highlighting the safety and security risks associated with operators who are frequently exploited by criminals for quick escapes.
