Lawmakers earn N600k, not N900k – Reps spokesperson clarifies

Rotimi Akin, the spokesperson for the House of Representatives, clarified that lawmakers’ monthly salary is N600,000, not the reported N900,000.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, Akin reiterated the House members’ commitment to a 50% salary reduction to alleviate financial hardships.

Akin addressed media discrepancies, explaining that after deductions for advances like housing, the actual monthly salary for members is N600,000.

He noted that the member who revealed his salary on a television program was an exception, as he assumed office through a court decision months after the onboarding process was completed.

The House resolution on July 18, 2024, mandated a 50% salary reduction for six months. However, this was not implemented for July due to administrative delays. Akin assured that the necessary instructions have been issued, and the pledge will be enforced going forward.

He emphasized that there is no need for an investigation, as the House’s position has been clearly communicated to journalists seeking clarification. Akin called for patience and assured that the House remains committed to earning Nigerians’ trust and confidence.
