As reported by BBC, the 50-year-old will temporarily step up from his current role as the England Under-21 coach to take over from Southgate, who stepped down two days after England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final last month.
Carsley expressed his readiness to lead the team, stating, “Given my familiarity with the players and the international football environment, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA completes the process of hiring a new manager.”
He emphasized the importance of continuity, adding, “My primary focus is to ensure we maintain momentum, with our goal being promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”
Carsley, a former Premier League midfielder with a 17-year career that included stints at Derby and Everton, transitioned into management after his playing days. He has served as a caretaker manager for Coventry, Brentford, and Birmingham before being appointed as England’s Under-20 coach in 2020.
He quickly advanced to lead the England Under-21 team, guiding them to victory in the 2023 European Championship, marking their first win in the tournament in 39 years.
