Man Fires at Stepmom for Attempting Hug at Graduation Ceremony

A woman was shot by her stepson when she attempted to hug him during a high school graduation ceremony in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, and the perpetrator, identified as 21-year-old Christian Bencomo, is now in custody without bail.

Fox News reported that the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) responded to reports of gunfire at the Albuquerque Convention Center around 5 p.m., where the graduation for the Southwest Secondary Learning Center was taking place.

Authorities stated that the woman was attending her son’s graduation when her stepson arrived. “As she began to embrace him, he drew a handgun and shot her in the neck,” said the police.

Gilbert Gallegos, APD Communications Director, described the scene as chaotic with over 100 attendees at the ceremony. He noted that the woman was quickly transported to a hospital and is expected to survive her injuries.

Bencomo was detained at the scene by onlookers until police arrived. According to the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center’s records, he faces multiple charges including unlawful carrying of a weapon, aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm to a family member, and preventative detention.
