NEMA Provides 1,312 Metric Tonnes of Food Aid to Kaduna

NEMA has provided 1,312 metric tonnes of various food items to the government of Kaduna State for distribution among vulnerable populations.

During the handover of the supplies to Governor Uba Sani, the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, highlighted that this contribution is part of the federal government’s efforts to mitigate the effects of rising food prices across the country.

Ms. Umar stated, “Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the President sanctioned the distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities from the National Strategic Reserve. The items include maize, millet, sorghum, and garri, designated for distribution to qualifying recipients in the communities via committees established in each local government area.”

She detailed that Kaduna State’s share includes 550 metric tonnes of maize (10,120 bags of 50kg), 650 metric tonnes of sorghum (11,778 bags of 50kg), and 237 metric tonnes of millet (4,370 bags of 50kg).

According to the federal directive, 20% of the food allocations for each local government area are reserved for religious organizations, and 3% are allocated to local boarding schools.

The Director-General also advised Governor Sani about the 2024 seasonal climate forecasts, emphasizing the need for preparedness against potential floods in various states and local government areas. Governor Sani instructed the distribution committee and security forces to ensure that the food is fairly delivered to those in need and pledged that the committee would manage the distribution equitably.

Usman Mazadu, the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), expressed gratitude to NEMA for their ongoing support of the state’s vulnerable populations in his opening remarks.
