Ogun Governor Eliminates ₦10,000 Job Application Fee, Directs Refunds

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has eliminated the ₦10,000 administrative fee that was previously required from applicants seeking employment in the state’s civil service.

The governor has instructed the Chairman of the Civil Service Commission to immediately cease the collection of this fee and to refund those who had already made payments.

This decision was communicated in a statement issued on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tokunbo Talabi.

Talabi noted that the governor’s action was driven by the economic difficulties currently affecting many Nigerians.

He explained that the job application fee, which had been in place for several decades, was originally charged by the Civil Service Commission to cover the costs associated with third-party independent examiners responsible for administering and overseeing the computer-based tests (CBT) and testing centers.

“As a gesture of goodwill and in recognition of the present economic challenges, the state government has decided to waive the fee for new applications and to refund those who have already paid. This decision aligns with the overall objective of the recruitment exercise, which is to alleviate the hardships faced by citizens and to create employment opportunities within the state,” Talabi stated.

Earlier in the week, the Permanent Secretary of the Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Roseline Jacobs, had announced the government’s plans to fill various vacancies across ministries, departments, and agencies. The positions include roles for medical personnel, accountants, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers, architects, and town planning officers, among others.

Jacobs had previously instructed applicants to obtain application forms from the Civil Service Commission in Abeokuta after paying a non-refundable fee of ₦10,000. However, with the governor’s new directive, this fee has been abolished.

Applicants are advised to submit their completed application forms and credentials by Thursday, August 8, 2024. The state government plans to recruit approximately 500 individuals for these positions.
