Paris 2024: Nigeria’s Olympic Medal Hopes Fade as Tobi Amusan Falls Short

Tobi Amusan, who was a key contender for Nigeria’s medal hopes at the ongoing Paris Olympics, has been knocked out of the competition. The 27-year-old participated in the semi-finals of the women’s 100m hurdles on Friday, running in lane six. Unfortunately, Amusan finished third with a time of 12.55 seconds, which was insufficient to advance to the finals.

Amusan, who is both the reigning world champion and world record holder, trailed behind Alaysha Johnson of the United States, who posted a time of 12.39 seconds, and Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who finished in 12.50 seconds.

This result further highlights Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the Paris Olympics. With the games nearing their end on Sunday, the country remains without a medal.

Earlier in the week, former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s lackluster performance, citing poor sports administration as the root cause. Onigbinde emphasized that the issue is not due to a lack of technical skill but rather administrative shortcomings, including failures in properly registering athletes for their events.

He expressed concern that many sports administrators have strayed from the fundamental goals of developmental programs that once propelled Nigeria to success in international competitions. Onigbinde emphasized that to enhance the country’s future performance, it is crucial to disentangle politics from sports.
