PDP  denounces efforts to impeach Fubara amid rising tensions

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed strong opposition to the call by the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in Rivers State for the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing it as a potential catalyst for chaos.

This controversy arises amid a deeper conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the FCT Minister, whose relationship has significantly deteriorated.

The local APC chapter has rallied its members in the State House of Assembly, which includes the Speaker and 27 other members, to commence impeachment proceedings against Fubara, accusing him of failing to fulfill the terms of a peace agreement mediated by President Bola Tinubu last year.

In contrast, the Rivers State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) supports the impeachment, accusing the governor of mismanaging funds meant for the state’s 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

At a press conference in Abuja, Debo Ologunagba, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, contended that the defecting lawmakers from the PDP to the APC have forfeited their right to initiate impeachment proceedings based on Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution. This section states that a House of Assembly member must vacate their seat if they join another party before their term ends.

Ologunagba also called on the Inspector General of Police to monitor the situation closely, warning that the inflammatory rhetoric from the APC Chairman in Rivers could lead to further instability and undermine the democratic process in the region.
