The Yobe Police Command has announced the arrest of 18 suspects related to Thursday’s violent protest and vandalism in the towns of Nguru, Potiskum, and Gashua.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Damaturu, the command’s spokesman, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed that the suspects, posing as peaceful protesters, had set public buildings on fire and stolen food items and empowerment equipment.
Abdulkarim stated that the suspects would be charged in court once the investigation is concluded. He also mentioned that the state Commissioner of Police, Garba Ahmed, had warned against the destruction of government property anywhere in the state.
He emphasized the command’s determination to enforce the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on the affected towns to maintain law and order.
“While acknowledging the right to peaceful assembly, the command asserts that this right is not absolute and must not violate the rights of others. Any criminal activities will be met with strong resistance.
“The command reaffirms its commitment to maintaining law and order and cautions against violent protests that could lead to social and economic disruption,” he stated.
The spokesman urged communities to cooperate with the police to prevent further chaos caused by troublemakers.
