Police in Katsina successfully thwarts bandit attack, rescues passengers traveling to Onitsha

Armed bandits targeted two vehicles on Monday night – a luxury bus traveling from Sokoto to Onitsha and a Volkswagen Golf heading from Gusau to Zaria along the Funtua-Gusau Road in Katsina State.

Due to the gunfire exchange, both vehicles veered off the road. Upon receiving a distress call, a police patrol team, known as Operation EYE, swiftly responded by deploying an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) to the scene.

The timely arrival of the police thwarted the bandits’ attempt to abduct passengers. Faced with the decisive action of the security team, the assailants retreated into the nearby bush, evading capture.

Subsequently, the police successfully rescued 45 passengers from the luxury bus, predominantly of Igbo descent, and five additional individuals from the Golf with registration No: DKA-12YF.

All the abducted passengers were safely rescued and are now under the care of the authorities. However, five individuals remain unaccounted for, and efforts are underway to locate them.

The authorities have intensified search efforts to find the missing persons. Additionally, the patrol team managed to recover the luxury bus from the bush, despite some difficulties. It is currently being held at the station as part of the ongoing investigation.
