Refinery Stalemate: NNPC Defends Itself to Senate, Denies Being Economic Saboteurs or Criminals

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has declared that it does not engage in activities harmful to the nation’s interests. The company has denied any involvement in importing substandard petroleum products.

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPCL, emphasized during a session with the Senate Ad-hoc Committee led by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) that NNPC and its officials are neither criminals nor thieves and are not persecuting anyone.

Kyari stated that NNPC does not lie or engage in criminal activities, and it is committed to protecting the country’s dignity and serving its citizens. He refuted allegations of economic sabotage, asserting that the company operates within the confines of the law, including the Petroleum Industry Act and the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA).

Kyari also highlighted that NNPC is a company owned by over 200 million Nigerians and that it has transformed from a loss-making entity for 43 years into a profit-making organization. He stressed that the NNPC’s primary duty is to maximize value and protect the economic interests of the nation, adding that misinformation has led to false perceptions of the company’s actions.

He reassured that the NNPC has no involvement in the importation of substandard products, adhering strictly to regulatory standards and protocols. Kyari concluded by expressing the company’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and serving Nigeria’s best interests.
