Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has outlined a potential strategy for senators seeking to remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio from office.
Since assuming the role of the Senate President, Akpabio has faced significant controversies and criticism. Critics have accused him of mishandling important national issues and being overly accommodating to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. These issues have fueled discussions about his impeachment and resignation.
On Tuesday, Sani commented that while impeaching Akpabio is a challenging task, it is achievable. According to Sani, a senator aiming to initiate the impeachment process must first consult with fellow senators and secure sufficient support to move forward with the motion.
However, Sani cautioned that if the impeachment effort fails, the initiating senator could face suspension until the next election. He shared his thoughts on X, stating, “Impeaching Akpabio is possible if a senator can rally enough support to initiate the process. But if it fails, the senator might face suspension until the next election.”
This statement follows activist Aisha Yesufu’s call for Akpabio’s impeachment, spurred by his controversial remarks prior to the EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest. Yesufu urged senators to act, suggesting that one of them could take over as Senate President.
