Three people dead as gas explosion rocks Abuke Pan, Lekki-Epe Lagos

A catastrophic gas explosion occurred at Abule Pan along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in the Ibeju Lekki Local Government area of Lagos State, claiming at least three lives.

The explosion happened on Tuesday around 3:34 pm when a 50kg Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cylinder detonated outside a line of shops.

Margaret Adeseye, the Director/CEO of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, reported that the explosion originated from an industrial gas cylinder positioned at the front of the shops, resulting in a loud explosion and significant fireballs that spread rapidly, causing widespread alarm.

Emergency teams from the Lekki Phase II Fire Station, along with personnel from the Health Environment, the military, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Ibeju Lekki Local Government, worked together to put out the fire and mitigate further damage. “The explosion was caused by a mishandled 50kg LNG cylinder at the shopfront. Teams from various agencies including the Lekki Phase II Fire Station, Health Environment, military, FRSC, and local government officials responded. The explosion led to three fatalities and one injury.”
