President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday convened the National Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa, marking his first time hosting the gathering since assuming office over a year ago.
As tradition dictates, former presidents and past heads of state were invited to attend the meeting. Among those present were former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, while Abdulsalami Abubakar and former Head of State Yakubu Gowon participated virtually.
The meeting is reportedly focused on the recent #EndBadGovernance protests and their consequences, according to sources familiar with the proceedings. The protests, which highlighted widespread hardship and hunger across the nation, began on August 1 and, although initially planned as a 10-day event, gradually lost momentum.
According to the Daily Post, serving ministers from the Tinubu administration were also expected to present to the Council, even though they are not formal members. The president specifically invited these ministers for their presentations.
Other officials anticipated to participate include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, the National Security Adviser (NSA), and the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
In addition to a presentation by NSA Nuhu Ribadu, the agenda includes discussions on food security by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, the state of the economy by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, road construction by the Minister of Works, and an overview of the solid minerals sector by the Minister of Solid Minerals.
The Council of State is composed of the President, who serves as Chairman, the Vice-President as Deputy Chairman, all former Presidents and Heads of Government, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, all state Governors, and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.
