The Nigerian Army has declared that hoisting foreign flags in Nigeria constitutes a treasonable offense and those responsible will face legal consequences.
This announcement followed incidents where protesters in Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Plateau states were seen waving Russian flags last Saturday.
In response, President Bola Tinubu convened a National Security Council meeting to address this issue and other security threats to the nation.
The meeting took place in the President’s office at the State House in Abuja as nationwide protests against hunger and poor governance entered their fifth day.
Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, expressed the military’s strong disapproval of displaying foreign flags within Nigeria.
He stated, “We briefed Mr. President on the current situation. Since the protests began, all security agencies have been working together. Initially, the protests were peaceful, but we have identified individuals exploiting the situation to cause chaos. There has been looting, stealing, and other criminal activities.
“Additionally, we have witnessed the unacceptable act of flying foreign flags within Nigeria’s sovereignty. This is a treasonable offense and will be treated as such. We will not tolerate anyone flying any foreign flag in Nigeria.
“We are issuing a clear warning, as directed by the President, that we will not accept any disruption of the peace and tranquility of Nigeria. Those responsible for encouraging these actions, including the individuals making the flags, will face serious consequences.”
General Musa added, “We are closely monitoring those pushing young people to carry out these acts. We have identified the sources and will take decisive action. The President’s instructions are clear: we will not tolerate anyone attempting to disrupt Nigeria’s peace.
“We stand united to assure Nigerians that we are working closely and with synergy to maintain peace and tranquility in the country,” he concluded.
