“I spoke constructively as an opposition figure and as someone who genuinely wants the best for the president, the government, and the people of Nigeria. My intention was not to create discord or offend anyone,” he clarified.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State had previously criticized President Bola Tinubu’s policies, asserting that they had exacerbated the poverty and suffering of Nigerians. He had also described the President’s August 4th address, which urged protesters to suspend their demonstrations and engage in dialogue, as “very empty” and lacking in reassurance.

In response to his comments, several political figures in Bauchi State, including former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, and current Senator Shehu Buba, criticized the governor for his stance.

During the Bauchi State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, Governor Mohammed clarified that his statements should be interpreted as a wake-up call for both the federal and state governments to address the pressing concerns of the citizens.

“We must listen when the people’s outcry is loud regarding bad governance and the areas where their expectations have not been met,” he said. “With limited resources, we need to make the most of what we have to achieve the greatest impact.”

Governor Mohammed further emphasized that it is insufficient to place all the blame on the Federal Government for the nation’s challenges, as state governments also bear responsibility.

“We are not solely blaming the Federal Government; we must also critically assess ourselves at the state level, ensuring that we take actions that directly benefit our people by putting food on the table and alleviating their burdens,” he stated. “Although we may not control national policies, as loyal federalists, we must effectively implement them while also addressing our own local challenges.”

He stressed that his remarks were not aimed solely at the Federal Government or intended to be partisan, but rather were a call for all leaders, including governors, to embrace their responsibilities.

Governor Mohammed concluded by expressing his gratitude to the council members for their continuous support and camaraderie over the years.
