Why I’m Happy I Grew Up in Enugu Not Lagos – Flavour

Nigerian singer Flavour is one of the most successful and renowned artistes in the country today. Flavour is also proudly Igbo and is unarguably one of, if not the most successful artiste from Eastern Nigeria. During a new interview with the Afrobeats Podcast, Flavour opened up about why he’s so happy he grew up in Enugu, and not Lagos. And also spoke about how things differ in both states. Here’s what Flavour had to say.

Revealing why he’s happy he grew up in Enugu not Lagos and explaining how the two sets of people differ, FLAVOUR said:

FLAVOUR: Growing up from the East is like a blessing I will say. It’s a blessing for me. Because imagine I’m Igbo and I was born in Lagos, there is a lot I will lose out on. Because you want to know what your culture is about, and not just know, you want to see, you want to be part of it, not just what your parents are teaching you. If I was born in Lagos, it would be like maybe my parents teach me and then I go out there, and it’s a different thing. But being born in Enugu—I’m from Anambra but I was born in Enugu—and Enugu is like the East central, so being born there, it just opens you up generally to what the culture is about.

And then, in Enugu as well, there’s not a lot of music going on or entertainment in general, because you know the entertainment city in Nigeria is Lagos. But if you have the talent, Enugu is -a cool city, it’s not a rough city. There’s no rush. Whatever you have to do in Enugu, you have to take it easy, you have to take your time because nobody is even rushing you. If you bring that ginger of “I want to blow today”, they are not in a rush, they’re just looking at you.

And Enugu is also a real city in terms of people there are real. You cannot deceive them with maybe the way you dress. If you say you’re a musician, they want to hear you. The moment you’re so dressed, first of all they’re looking at you “who is this? You wan confuse us with shine shine” unlike Lagos, that they want to see the package first. But Enugu is more about substance.
